Deputy Sheriff Burlie W. Duvall, III

Appomattox County Sheriff's Office, VA

Deputy Sheriff Burlie Duvall was killed at a crash scene on Route 460 west of Cabin Field Road, in Campbell County, at approximately 5:33 p.m. He and another deputy were returning to Appomattox County from the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy when they encountered a crash in the roadway. They activated their emergency lights and parked in the left lane to assist at the scene. An approaching tractor-trailer swerved to avoid the emergency vehicles and struck Deputy Duvall. Deputy Duvall died at the scene. Seven additional people were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Deputy Duvall had served with the Appomattox County Sheriff's Office for only two months. He had previously served with the Prince George's County, Maryland, Department of Corrections. He is survived by his wife, three children, nine siblings, parents, maternal grandparents, and nine nieces and nephews.

Police Officer Austin "Zade" Abdelnabi

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, NV

Police Officer Zade Abdelnabi was shot and killed responding to a call regarding an armed subject at the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue in Las Vegas. Before 4:00 p.m., Officer Abdelnabi and other officers went to investigate reports of an armed man at a local business. When they found the man walking on the street, waving his gun, they were met with gunfire, and shots were exchanged. Officer Abdelnabi was struck eight times as he exited his patrol vehicle and never fired his weapon. Officer Abdelnabi was transported to University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his wounds. The suspect died at the scene; he was struck by a gunshot to the chest and a self-inflicted shot to the head. Officer Abdelnabi was a United States Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for over two years. Survivors include his wife, parents, two brothers, and a sister.

*The $5,000 survivor benefit is paid when a line of duty death occurs. Line of duty is defined as AFBA members who are Emergency Service Providers to include law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency medical services providers who are killed while involved in operations at or responding to/from the scene of an incident. If death occurs otherwise, outside of a suicide, the beneficiary will receive a $2000 benefit.
